An excavator travel motor is a large electric motor that drives the main hydraulic pump. It’s also called an auxiliary drive motor or power unit.

The excavator travel motor is connected to the main hydraulic pump by a drive shaft that runs along the outside of the boom. The drive shaft has shoes at each end that connect to the boom and base, allowing them to move together as one piece.

When you push on the joystick, you’re actually moving a small hydraulic cylinder inside a larger one. The smaller cylinder is connected to a rack gear on top of your joystick, which moves up and down with your movements. The larger cylinder contains thousands of gallons of hydraulic fluid and has pistons inside it that move up and down when you press on your joystick.

Those pistons are connected by hoses to cylinders inside your excavator’s arm assembly, which allows them to extend or retract as needed when you move the arm from side-to-side or up-and-down (or both).
